Jaguars hire Mike Mularkey as head coach

Written by Michael Clinton on .

The Jacksonville Jaguars have their new head coach: former Falcons’ Offensive Coordinator Mike Mularkey.

What this tells me:
ESPN reported the hiring shortly after 10pm Tuesday night.

First off, the quick hiring tells me that new owner Shahid Khan was not kidding when he told the papers that things would move quickly.

Secondly, this hiring reassures me on my thoughts about Khan – that he is going to the type of owner that Jacksonville has been longing for.

Jaguars contact three coordinators for head coach job

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network has reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars have contacted three teams, requesting permission to speak to their offensive coordinators for the vacant head coaching position.

La Canfora reports the Jaguars requested to speak to the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.

This is a good step in the right direction for a franchise that is about to go through a lot of change. With a new owner coming in this week, this could be a good opportunity for the organization to go away from the defensive minded head coaches they have had since 1995.

Let’s take a look at each of the coaches.

Out On A Positive Note

Maurice Jones-Drew giving the fans at Everbank Field some love before the long off-season begins.

Earlier today, the Jacksonville Jaguars wrapped up a disappointing season with a 19-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts, completing the season sweep. While the season never shaped up as the Jaguars had hoped, there's a lot of positive aspects of the season that the Jaguars can look to build on as they move forward.

Blaine Gabbert didn't show much development for much of the season, but over the past month and a half, he's started looking more and more like a young franchise quarterback. I was guilty of jumping on him far too ealy, and he promptly made me look like a fool, but I prefer looking like a moron than looking like a genius in this case.

Maurice Jones-Drew wrapped up his best season to date, topping the Jaguars' former single season rushing record with 1606 yards. MJD also won the rushing title this season, besting LeSean McCoy by 297 yards.

Josh Scobee has officially made the transition from an inconsistent power kicker to a power kicker with great accuracy. He's proven this season that he's well balanced and very reliable with a huge leg. While having a great kicker won't win you a Super Bowl, it will certainly help, especially in tight games late in the season.

Mel Tucker got as much out of the Jaguars as physically possible, going 2-3 in his 5 games as interim coach. There's guys out there that I'd rather have as the Jaguars head coach, but I don't want to understate how impressed I was with Tucker. He deserves a strong look as a candidate for the Jaguars head coaching position, and I think he showed Shahid Khan just how good of a coach he really is.

As we look forward to the off-season, we need to realize that the Jaguars are still a very young, developing team. Yes, they took a step back this season, but now the path seems clear for the Jaguars to continue to ascend as an up and coming team. There's holes to be fixed, but they aren't as gaping as they once were. The way I see it, the Jaguars just need a couple wide receivers, better depth on their offensive line, and to get healthy. If they can accomplish that this off-season, there's no reason for the Jaguars not to be in the hunt for a playoff birth next season.

The Silver Lining

MJD rushing leader

Maurice Jones Drew is the NFL rushing leader for 2011.  In the Final game of the season, Jones Drew wrapped up the title of rushing leader as well as becoming the Jaguars All-Time rushing leader, surpassing the great Fred Taylor.  It is a bitter sweet award seeing as how the Jaguars have just 5 wins in 2011 and will not be in the playoffs.  Jones Drew is also the sole Jaguar voted to the Pro Bowl this year.  Hopefully the Jaguars will make some serious noise in the draft & free agency this off season.  This team will be better next season for sure.  QB Blaine Gabbert will improve.  TE Lewis will get back into form.  I can't see another year filled with so many players ending up on the IR again. Depth will be added to the O-line & the Jaguars have to get better WRs thru the draft or free agency.  Look for the CB position to be addressed as well.  Congratulations to MJD on his amazing 2011 season, you made us proud to say we're Jaguars fans.   Go Jags!

Before you lose your heads, this is meant as a joke; I know he's getting better, but it's still funny.

Dear Santa: Jaguars Edition

Written by Michael Clinton on .

Hellow Jaguars fans, it has been a long time since I have blogged. I recently graduated from the University of Central Florida and was lucky enough to land a job at a newspaper in Jacksonville, allowing me to move back to my hometown and start writing again.

The following is a memo to Santa Claus, or Gene Smith, or Shahid Khan, or anyone else who can fix the Jaguars this Christmas, or shortly thereafter.

Happy Holidays!

Shahid Khan On The Jaguars Compared To The Rams

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Here's the original Q&A with John Oehser that contained the following remark about the Rams. Hat tip to SBNation for the find.

"Of course, the Rams experience was a good one. That was last year and that would have happened if Stan hadn't exercised his right. That would be one example. The Rams experience - not the result, but the process - was a great experience, because you saw behind the curtain. This was a time they were in a flux. They had the first draft pick. So, you saw them dealing with the questions of, ‘Who should they draft? How much money?' Just like when the Jaguars were making some changes last Tuesday, you're not making them, but you're privy to them. So, I saw how some of those decisions got made, so from my viewpoint that was a really, really good experience. It gave me a sense as to what I would do, and in all candor, I think the Jaguars are a far better organization. Compared to the Rams, it's a far better organization. I think that's important because there's less you have to do."
