Why the Jaguars won't sign Mike Wallace

As many of you probably know, Mike Wallace is a restricted free agent. The Steelers and their fans love this guy, and they won't him to stay in Pittsburgh, but it's still possible for a team to swoop in and sign him. The downside for that team is that it would cost them a first round pick.

As Alfie Crow correctly pointed out at BCC, the compensatory pick that is given to the Steelers is the signing team's highest original first round pick. That means a team such as the Jaguars couldn't trade away the 7th pick of the draft for a lower pick, the 25th pick of the draft for our example, and give the Steelers that 25th pick while pocketing any additional picks acquired in the trade.

Alfie Crow with a good point on Mike Wallace

Alfie Crow at BCC pointed out today that a team cannot trade down in the first round and use that new, lower pick to compensate the Steelers for Mike Wallace. Compensation must be with the signing team's highest original first round pick.

Jaguars draft prospect - Justin Blackmon

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Justin_BlackmonJustin Blackmon (WR, Oklahoma State) is a top-tier athlete. Despite being only 6'1", 207 pounds, Blackmon has great upper end speed, and he has a great vertical that makes him a threat at any time.

Basically, Blackmon is an all-around great prospect. He runs great routes, can adjust to poor passes, and he keeps defenders off balance with his speed variation and crisp cuts. The Jaguars have been missing a top-tier receiver for a long time, and Blackmon could fit the bill for filling that void.

Still, most mock drafts have Blackmon disappearing from the board when the Rams pick at 6th overall. That poses a significant problem for the Jaguars, especially since wide receiver is their biggest position of need.

The Jaguars will likely have two options if they wish to address their receiving corp in the first round. They could trade up a few of picks, possibly to the Browns' position at number 4 overall, or they could trade down to around the 15th pick of the draft and hope to draft Michael Floyd. the discussion on Floyd is for another day however.

Final thought: Justin Blackmon makes all the sense in the world for the Jaguars. If by some miracle he slides to 7th overall, I'd be livid if they didn't snatch him off the board, but the Jaguars can't bank on that if they're the guy they identify as "their man." The Jaguars have indicated that they'd be willing to entertain the idea of trading down, but I wonder if they're willing to trade up.

Yours truly taking a look at the Jaguars signing Robinson, Laurent

Written by Shane Clemons on .

My take on the Robinson, Henne signings from This Given Sunday:

"The Jaguars are operating as if Blaine Gabbert is a franchise quarterback. If he pans out, the Jaguars may be able to produce an average offense, and that, coupled with a stellar defense, could produce a playoff caliber team. The Jaguars success will be determined entirely by Blaine Gabbert's capabilities and his receivers' abilities in 2012. Should they pan out in a solid way, the Jaguars should be a very formidable team in 2012. The signings of Robinson and Henne aren't glamorous, but they do strengthen the foundation of the team, and that's exactly what they're designed to do."

Stop the Tebow talk, seriously

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Paul Kuharsky of ESPN wrote this piece about the possibility of the Jags landing Tebow if Manning goes to Denver. Kuharsky doesn't think it's a good fit, and he's absolutely right in thinking that, but I want you good folks to look at the poll results from the article.

Oh come on people! Stop! Just stop!

Hanging up the horseshoe

It's finally official, in a move that surprised absolutely NO ONE, the Colts have decided to part ways with long time QB Peyton Manning.  They will hold a press conference tomorrow with both Manning & Colts owner Jim Irsay in attendance.  Peyton has been throwing passes at Duke University for about a month now & all indications are that he will make a successful comeback....just not with the Colts.   I don't think the issue is if he can throw, but more importantly if he can take a hit.  I would be very cautious if I were a GM or Owner of a NFL team that is considering signing Manning.  I believe he will be able to throw with power & accuracy, but one solid sack could end his comeback / career.  I have no doubt that some team will jump all in when it comes to signing him.  I just hope it isn't the Jaguars.  Let Peyton go to Miami or San Francisco. The colts will now draft QB Andrew Luck out of Stanford and spend the next 4 years building the team around him as they did with Peyton.  They will have to do it without WRs Pierre Garcon & Reggie Wayne as both will most likely become free agents. The Colts will still have Freeney & Mathis (who just resigned) on defense.  Jeff Saturday will apparently retire & when the season starts the Colts will be a very different team.  I don't expect them to be a threat for the AFC South title again for some time.  I don't wish any ill will towards Peyton, but I'm very glad he will won't be wearing a horseshoe on his helmet ever again.  GO JAGS!!!
