You can't draft scared

Written by Adam Stites on .

A recent discussion in the comments on a Big Cat Country post written by Alfie Crow started the topic of drafting scared. I have been an advocate of drafting Florida State's quarterback Christian Ponder, as has Crow. Where we differ, though, is where in the draft order the Jaguars should select Ponder.

To summarize: I believe that Christian Ponder is every bit as good as any quarterback in this draft and is worth the 16th overall selection. However, the market value of Ponder is lower than that and the Jaguars could benefit from trading down in the first round, acquiring more value in the draft and then selecting Ponder. Alfie believes that a franchise quarterback is a premium that is important enough that a team shouldn't risk trading back and missing out on the player they want.

That is something I call drafting scared.

Gene Smith tendencies: Age is just a number?

Written by Adam Stites on .

Danny Watkins is arguably the best interior lineman prospect in this year's draft. His performance during Senior Bowl week was nothing less than dominant and he showed the raw ability to get even better in the NFL. So why isn't he considered a first round prospect? He's going to turn 27 this November.

The NFL Draft is an event in which teams can improve themselves by infusing new youthful talent into their roster. Or is it just talent? If age is a factor, there must be a point in time in which the value of a player exceeds the negatives of their age. On that same train of thought, is there a point in which a player is too young?

If a team drafts a player that is too young, they could be taking a risk on the development and the maturity of the player. Through two drafts, Gene Smith appears to be a general manager that greatly factors age into his draft picks.

The bad news is that I didn't get any Pro Day reports out yesterday or most of today. The good news is that when I finally got time to start looking I found a very good amount of information. Have at it:

The Jaguars had a very noticable showing at the Boise State Pro Day on Thursday. Not only did offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter, run the wide receiver drills at the workout, the Jags also sent a secondary coach to watch safety Jeron Johnson.

The man himself, Gene Smith, was at the Central Florida Pro Day on Wednesday. Among the prospects at the work out was LB Bruce Miller who has already received interest from the Jaguars.

5:50 PM ET - The Jaguars were one of 17 teams present at the Boston College Pro Day today. The other teams listed on the BC Athletics site were the Falcons, Ravens, Browns, Packers, Texans, Colts, Chiefs, Saints, Giants, Jets, Raiders, Patriots, Eagles, 49ers, Seahawks and Buccaneers.

4:00 PM ET - Mount Union's Kyle Miller has popped up on the Pro Football Talk vists and workouts tracker for the Jaguars. According to the chart, Miller is scheduled to meet with the Jaguars sometime in April. CDSDraft.com reports that Miller is a 6'5, 249 pound tight end that doubled as a long snapper for Division III Mount Union.

2:00 PM ET - Contrary to the prior report, Mel Tucker was not at the Chattanooga Pro Day. It was defensive assistant Cory Undlin in attendance, a defensive back specialist than ran Skrine's workout along with two other Jaguars scouts according to Rhodes.

12:00 PM ET - Walker Rhodes, a writer for Bloguin's Optimum Scouting, is reporting live from the UT-Chattanooga Pro Day. According to one of his tweets, the Jaguars have sent defensive coordinator Mel Tucker to observe the pro day. Other teams in attendance are the Titans, Chiefs, Jets and Browns.

The prospect everyone is there to see is Chattanooga's CB Buster Skrine. Skrine isn't the biggest cornerback at just 5'9, 186 pounds, but his sub-4.4 speed and athleticism has made him a sure draft pick. Most project him to get drafted in the middle rounds of the draft.

To trade or not to trade?

Bengals QB Carson Palmer

With players like Eagles QB Kevin Kolb and Bengals QB Carson Palmer seemingly available via trade, the draft would appear to be only one of the ways a team could find a starting quarterback. With the Jaguars on the prowl for a future franchise quarterback of their own, the question as to whether or not the Jaguars would potentially be interested in one of these quarterbacks is only natural.

The most important thing to figure out before any fan can get behind one of these trades, though, is how much a given player is going to cost their team to acquire. Then it must be determined that the player acquired through a trade has more value than the player the team could have potentially drafted with the draft pick they traded away. Consider these quotes from Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback yesterday:

"...Andy Reid apparently is serious about trading Kevin Kolb. At the NFL meetings Sunday, a good source told me Reid already has one team willing to offer a first-round pick for Kolb, and now he's looking for a team with a higher choice in the round to make him a better deal...."

" ...Marvin Lewis is acknowledging to people he knows in football that Palmer won't be back in Cincinnati, and the Bengals are looking into all of the top quarterback prospects. 'Marvin knows how stubborn Carson is, and he thinks no matter what happens, the guy won't change his mind,' said one club executive... "

It looks very possible that both of these quarterbacks are on the trade market; so do they make sense for the Jaguars or is this the annual clammor for a big-name player among illogical fans?

6:15 PM ET - 30 of the NFL's 32 teams headed to the Georgia Pro Day today. The only two not there were the Chargers and the Vikings, says WUOG 90.5 FM in Georgia

Among the Bulldog prospects are two potential first rounders. Wide receiver A.J. Green is considered by most to be the best receiver in the draft and considered by some the best player in the draft. He is unlikely to fall outside the top 10 picks. DE/OLB Justin Houston has tons of athleticism and will likely be drafted early because of it. At 6'3, 270 he is said to have ran a 40 yard dash in under 4.6 seconds at his pro day today. Houston is being projected by most to be an outside linebacker in a 3-4.

6:05 PM ET - 25 teams sent personnel to the Nevada Pro Day today, where they have one of the best draft prospect class in the history of the school. According to Rotoworld's Evan Silva, among the personnel in attendance was the newest Jaguars coach, QB coach Mike Sheppard.

Sheppard was no doubt there to see Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick has been flying up draft boards due to his elite arm and athleticism, coupled with leadership and intelligence. He is a possibility as a first rounder, but is more likely going to fit into the second or third round come April.

9:00 PM ET - The Jaguars passed on the North Dakota Pro Day today. Jeff Kolpack of Bison Media Blog and the North Dakota athletics site both report that the Jets, Packers, Vikings, Seahawks and Eagles were the teams in attendance at UND.

12:50 PM ET - Kip Watson, a former professional football player and now football blogger, reports that there are several teams in attendance for the Abilene Christian Pro Day, with the Jaguars among them. Other teams listed by Watson were the Rams, Jets, Seahawks, Cowboys, Texans, Panthers, Raiders, Steelers, 49ers, Browns, Colts, Eagles and Vikings.

Most of these scouts are likely there to watch ACU's dynamic wide receiver, Edmond Gates. Gates is a 6'0, 192 pound wide out that ranks as one of the fastest players in the draft. Whether or not he can display that speed at his pro day today will be paramount in figuring out where he'll be drafted in April. He is currently expected to go in the middle rounds.

10:25 AM ET - Aaron Wilson of National Football Post reports Connecticut LB Lawrence Wilson is scheduled to meet with the Jaguars, Eagles and Broncos.

Wilson is a 6'1, 229 pound linebacker that projects well as a 4-3 OLB and should be drafted in the middle or later rounds of the draft.
