Friday Night (Hi)Lights

Written by Matthew Mochal on .

Hello folks,

Today is the first of many installments of Friday Night (Hi)Lights, a work in progress I will be updating every week.  This is where I will spotlight anywhere from One to Three college prospects I feel will make great Jaguars.  If there is enough interest from you, the reader, I can do this more often than once a week, so please, send in your feedback.

Thanks for reading,

Matt

First off is a player who rarely needs an introduction, as he makes his presence known for all opposing offensive players.  Looking over our current roster, I feel as though this linebacking position can and will be addressed in both Free Agency, whether that be Undrafted or Pro, we must address our lack of quality starters as well as solid depth/role players.  Our philosophy is to build through the draft, so even with a signing in free agency there is no need for this man to not have his name called for the Jaguars.  Here he is, Travis Lewis, OLB Oklahoma.

Jaguars Finishing Last. Wait What?!

Written by Shane Clemons on .

AOL's Sporting News has picked the Jaguars to finish last in their division in 2011. Don't worry folks, this is just AOL's prediction based on information provided by Florida Times-Union writer, Gene Frenette. I'm not throwing Frenette under the bus here. As he stated in a reactionary piece, he just provided the information, not the conclusions. I'm not upset by the article, from Sporting News. I would be lying, however, if I said it didn't annoy me. Let's get this out of the way. The Jaguars will not be finishing last in their division this season. Sure, it's possible that they could finish as low as third (although that would take a massive defensive leap for the Texans), but hear me now. The Jaguars will not finish behind the Tennessee Titans in 2011, and here's why.

Where will the Jaguars finish in their division in 2011?

David Garrard Lacks a Defense, Not Drive

Michael Lombardi said on "The BS Report" that Jaguars' quarterback, David Garrard, lacks the drive to become an elite quarterback. I like analyzing football. That's why I'm here, but this crosses a fine line. Michael Lombardi, Shane Clemons or anyone other than David Garrard have no way of judging an internal drive such as this. Sure, the Jaguars have stumbled down the stretch the last couple of seasons while in playoff contention, but that's not all on the quarterback's shoulders.

Playing QB in the NFL is similar to being the head coach of a team. Quarterbacks are blamed for much more than they are actually responsible for. On the other hand, they're also given more credit than they deserve when things are going correctly.

David Garrard's situation is that of the former.

Q&A: CBA Edition

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Today we're taking a look at one common question, as well as a few reader submitted questions. Most of this is centered around the CBA, but we'll also be touching on free agency. I thought the questions submitted by readers were well thought out, and they were thought provoking. Give yourselves a pat on the back, and let's do this.

Common Question:  Is there a deadline in place at which point the NFL will start to miss games?

There is no hard deadline, but the Hall of Fame Game is played August 7th. I would imagine that if there isn't a new CBA by the start of August, the NFL would begin to miss some pre-season games. The regular season starts September 8th. The NFL and the NFLPA* need to have a new CBA in place, in my mind, by September 6th. If they got it done on that date, they would have to push back the September 8th game, but they could still have the stadiums ready to use, and the players somewhat ready to go by September 11th.

Common Question Answers

Written by Shane Clemons on .

As this weekend continues, I'm trying to get my July ducks in a row. Part of that involves answering some common questions and concerns that are floating around this off-season, especially concerning the lockout. If you'd like to have a question answered, or get my opinion on something, fill out the form below, and I'll see what I can do. I reserve the right to use your name and question/comment/concern in article form, but I will never share your email. Thanks everyone, and happy Independence Day!

It's a slow weekend. We're not above taking some time to ourselves, so this seems like a good time to point out that there are many ways to follow The Jaggernaut. Why aren't you a fan on Facebook, why aren't you following me on Twitter? For shame.

Friday Thought Drop: NBA Joining the NFL

Written by Shane Clemons on .

For those of you that are regular readers of Big Cat Country, this introduction is pointless. Just click the jump. For those of you that don't read much over at BCC, here's what the "Friday Thought Drop" is all about. This is a collection of my thoughts that have accumulated over the week. I throw in a couple of updates (i.e. how the Jacksonville Sharks are doing) and throw it all together. The result is a bunch of loosely related content (or rather fragmented). It's usually fun, and on a rare occasion, thought provoking. That's what it is, let's go.
