Q&A: Questions From John

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Today, we're looking at questions from John. Most of these are from our friend, John McGrath, who has been writing articles for the site, but one is from one John Garlock. As always, most of these are football centric, but I'm not promising that all of the answers will be completely straightforward. As with all things in life, the mailbag is not purely black and white. Let's jump right to it.

John Garlock: The Jaguars are in the second toughest division in the NFL. How do you think they would fare in the toughest division, the NFC North?

Shane: NFC North? Toughest division? No no no. The NFC South is the toughest division in football. They have 2 solid playoff teams and another that has a good shot at a wild card birth. The Jaguars would stack up well against the Vikings and the Bears, but the Lions and the Packers pose major issues, because; the Jaguars don't defend the pass well. The Jaguars would likely beat the Lions, however, as their receivers don't complete the process of catching the ball.

Jones-Drew Has Not Lost his Mojo

probably seen or heard that Maurice Jones-Drew needs to lighten his load this season and that his backup, Rashad Jennings should get more carries.  I know that MJD is coming of a knee injury, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that he will get fewer carries or have less production.  I am a firm believer that he will not only continue to play at a high level, I believe he will improve on last seasons stats.  It wouldn’t surprise me if he came into this season with a major chip on his shoulder & it shouldn’t surprise any of you either.  Don’t forget he had 6 straight games with 100 plus yards towards the end of last year & he did that with a knee that was, in his own words, “bone on bone”.

I have had the misfortune of having a very similar knee injury before.  It hurt like hell and it took me about 10 months of rehab to get back to normal.  I know for a fact that Maurice is a lot tougher, stronger & faster than I am.  He also has the benefit of a state of the art medical facility/rehab & training team to help him.  I just sat on the couch with my leg on a pillow for most of my rehab.  Yes, I went to rehab and tried to work out, but we all know that MJD is pushing himself and his surgically repaired knee a heck of a lot more than I ever did.

Thoughts On the UFL, the Lockout

Written by Shane Clemons on .

UFL

Many people (myself included) wondered whether their would be an exodus of players from the NFL to the UFL if the NFL's season was seriously questioned. Okay, I'll admit that the notion always seemed a little far fetched. After all, major sports leagues don't lose top-notch players, even during work stoppages. It would seem that I now have my answer.

According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, sources are telling him that players are being sent home from camp due to financial woes. So much for paying NFL players to switch leagues. Their seems to be a hierarchy of football in North America, and the UFL just isn't destined to be part of it. Others have tried to insert their own brand of football (remember the XFL?). The fact of the matter is that the NFL will always be first, followed by college football, and the CFL and the AFL. 4 leagues are enough. We don't need more.

Underrated Player: Greg Jones

Written by Shane Clemons on .

As you may have guessed from the title, this article is all about Greg Jones. Calling Greg Jones an underrated player may be an understatement. He's more like THE underrated player on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sure, most Jaguars fan do know Greg Jones, but he plays one of the most underrated positions in the game.

Once upon a time, Greg Jones actually ran the ball on a frequent basis. Back in 2005, he carried the ball 151 times for 575 yards, but those days are long gone. Jones has carried the ball 8 times in the past 3 seasons combined, and that's perfectly fine with a guy like me.

Insight on the Insight Bowl: A Look into Blaine Gabbert

Written by Marcus Pearson on .

Gabbert-285x225

There were many scouts and even a few NFL General Managers in attendance on December 28th, 2010 for the 2010 edition of the Insight Bowl. One of, if not the, main attractions was QB Blaine Gabbert of the Missouri Tigers. He was obviously one of the top priorities for Jacksonville Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith. Gene flew out to that game and just a few months later, he traded the 16th overall pick and a mid 2nd round pick to the Washington Redskins in order to move up to pick 10 and select Gabbert, who he also considered to be the very best player in this entire draft. Today, I'm going to give my own analysis into that game and relay exactly the type of things Gene saw that day and exactly what we could see from Gabbert in the future.

We're back with another mailbag. I've already got my questions from John ready to go, but where do you come into all of this? We've got sarcasm, plenty to talk about, but we still need you. Get your questions in so I can act like I know what I'm talking about. We'll be answering all of your questions on Wednesday.

Marcedes Lewis Stacks Up

Written by John McGrath on .

Marcedes_Lewis

I would like to talk about something that has been a thorn in my side for the last 2 seasons.  Marcedes Lewis is absolutely among the top 5 TEs in the NFL, period.  I really wish the so-called experts on TV would check the stats before dismissing Lewis just because he plays for the Jaguars.  The facts don’t lie.  If the talking heads on ESPN are handing out props so easily to the likes of Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Dallas Clark and others then they should toss some of those kudos in Lewis’s direction too.  Do they forget that he was a pro bowl selection.  All he does is everything you would want a TE to do for your team.  He catches TD passes, blocks better than almost any other TE in the NFL, knows how to get open and uses his size to great advantage.  I did check the stats and the results speak for themselves.

Lewis   58 rec.  700 yards  10 TDs   12.1 avg. gain per play  16 games started   2 fum.
Witten  94 rec.  1,002 yards  9 TDs  10.7 avg. gain per play  16 games started   1 fum.
Gates     50 rec.  782 yards  10 TDs  15.6 avg. gain per play  16 games started  1 fum.
Gonzalez  70 rec.  656 yards  6 TDs   9.4 avg. gain per play  16 games started  0 fum.
V. Davis  56 rec.  914 yards  7 TDs  16.3 avg. gain per play  16 games started  0 fum.
