On Brunell, Flynn, and the tag-and-trade

The Packers may be looking to sell Matt Flynn's services to some desperate team.

The Green Bay Packers are the team that wrote the book on the tage and trade. In a piece for TGS, Will Horton highlights some of the big deals that have made the tag-and-trade option legitimate for the trading team.

First off, for those of you that didn't yet know, the Packers re-signed tight end Jermichael Finley to a two-year contract earlier in the day. No big deal right? Well, hold the phone.

The move, as accurately pointed out by virtually everyone covering the story, frees up the Packers' franchise tag. He was the guy the Packers had expected to apply the franchise tag to. With him locked down, there's a ton of speculation that the Packers will franchise backup quarterback Matt Flynn, and try to trade him away.

The Packers have traded away backup quarterbacks in the past, as I alluded to earlier. The Jaguars aquired Mark Brunell from the Packers back in 1995. The Seahawks did the same thing as the Jaguars, acquiring Matt Hasselbeck in 2001. This isn't a new trick the Packers may attempt to pull.

Here's my big issue with Matt Flynn. No one knows how good he really is. He had one unbelievable career day against the Lions, but beyond that, he's a giant unknown. Why would a team gamble so much money (about $14 million) on a guy that's seen the field so little?

One word; desperation.

Failure is not an option for the Jaguars

Shahid Khan wants to field a winning team, and he'll likely do whatever it takes to do so.

One of the most common sports cliches of all time is, "failure is not an option," but that may actually be the case for the Jacksonville Jaguars. By all accounts and reports, Shahid Khan has been doing all the right thins as the owner of the Jaguars, and he's said most of the right things as well. From an outsider's perspective, it appears that Khan is running the team like a business, which it is, and he's empowering the "football guys" to do their jobs without interference from the top.

Possibly Khan's most valuable trait is that he seems to know his own limitations. Khan is more than willing to let guys that know the in-depth strategy of pro football make the important football decisions. He understands that he's essentially a fan in terms of football knowledge, and he wants to field a great team. To do that, he knows he has to let his football guys do their jobs.

Outside of the football aspects of running a franchise, Khan is an expert. He's saying virtually everything fans and residents of Jacksonville want to hear. While other teams are fighting to stay away from playing in London, Khan actually wants to spread the Jaguars brand overseas.

Shahid Khan wants to lose the tarps

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Here's a great interview with Shahid Khan that reveals some of his short and long-term plans for the Jaguars.

"Do you hope to get rid of the tarps that cover some of the stadium seats? (The team covers the seats because it cannot sell them.)

KHAN: Absolutely. To me, every day I look at the tarps it is like underachieving, and I can’t wait to be able to do that."

Don't expect Jacksonville to draft Trent Richardson

Written by Shane Clemons on .

trent_richardson
Trent Richardson will be a great running back for one NFL team, but that won't be the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Yesterday, I linked you to various early mock drafts around the internet. Many of those mocks have the Jaguars taking either Quinton Coples or Dre Kirkpatrick, both legitimate selections in my mind. Another mock (the only one with trades mind you) had the Jaguars trading down to the Bengals' 21st selection and taking Kendall Wright. That makes good sense because the Jaguars may want extra picks and Wright comes at a position of need (WR).

Then there was the Optimum Scouting mock draft. It was the only one of the bunch I thought was way off base. Here's what it had to say,

"7 . Jacksonville Jaguars - Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
-Maurice Jones-Drew is inching closer running the tread off his tires (Jacksonville's fault), and they'll need to replace him. Heard a rumor that if Richardson is here, the Jaguars WILL take him."

No, no, no, and a thousand times no. The Jaguars aren't likely to draft a running back with the seventh pick of the draft. I'm not saying they won't draft one; quite contrary, if an RB is there for you with good value after the first round, take him, but there's no sense in throwing the seventh pick of the draft at a position the Jaguars are actually well set at.

I'm hoping assuming the guys over at Optimum Scouting are simply experiencing symptoms of being generalists, and I don't mean that as an insult. Readers and writers that narrowly focus their attention on a select few teams become intimately close with that team. That's why it's better to trust local media members than the Mel Kiper-s of the world. They simply know the team and its needs far more closely.

It's for that reason that we can say, no, the Jaguars will not be drafting Trent Richardson. Maurice Jones-Drew is one of the toughest, most resilient players in the league, and he's coming off of his first rushing title. Yeah, the Jaguars have probably run him harder than necessary over the past few years, but he's also one of the most durable guys in the league.

That being said, the Jaguars do need to develop a backup running back that can take the load off of Jones-Drew. What's this? I see the Jaguars already have that guy. His name is Rashad Jennings. He was absent throughout 2011 with a season-ending injury that really shouldn't have ended his season, but the Jaguars popped him on IR anyways. That's a discussion for another day I suppose.

My point is that the Jaguars have bigger needs where they can get more value out of the seventh pick than by selecting Trent Richardson. Richardson is a great runner. He's big, tough, and runs hard every play he gets the ball. It's nothing against his performance, but the Jaguars aren't looking for another star running back. So that rumor about the Jaguars taking Richardson if he's there? I'll call bulls#$t on that.

Early look at 2012 mock drafts

Written by Shane Clemons on .

It's still far too early to accurately speculate on who's picking who in April's draft. That being the case, I still love to keep up on various mock drafts that are floating around, so here's a look at who some guys have the Jaguars picking up in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Mocking the Draft - Feb. 17

Traded Down to pick #21

"1st-Kendall Wright WR Baylor- Wright is a gamebreaker and that's what the Jags need. I was thrilled to get him at 21. He brings an entire new threat to the Jags."

Mel Kiper's mock draft via ESPN's AFC South blog - Feb. 15

Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

"If the Jags don't add help at wide receiver in free agency, they could look for help here, but they're also desperate for pass rush help. They sacked opposing quarterbacks fewer than two times a game in 2011, and Coples would fit in the scheme as the top 4-3 defensive end in the draft. He has ideal physical traits, with great length at 6-foot-6, and the size to hold up in the run game, complementing his pass-rush skills. Jacksonville is another team that simply needs to upgrade the talent level, so it shouldn't reach on offense at the cost of adding superior talent."

NFL.com mock drafts - Jan. 16 through Feb. 15

Casseraly - Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Reuter - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

Brooks - Quinton CoplesDE, North Carolina

Davis - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

Optimum Scouting - Feb. 8

My goal is to give you a few solid reads from other sources a few times a week. You know, to keep it balanced.

Gabe Hiatt says Marion McCree is excited to start his coaching career.

Black and Teal on the Jaguars winning the AFC South.

Elliot Harrison on the Dolphins (this one just for fun).
