Gabbert played on a broken toe according to Ganguli

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Tania Ganguli was kind enough to drop us a nice tweet to settle what Blaine Gabbert's previously reported "foot injury" actually was. It was, as some may have speculated, a broken toe.

Now a broken toe isn't going to take a great quarterback and turn them into Cade McCown, but it's still a notable injury, and it's something that would affect the way a quarterback plays. Blaine Gabbert had a poor run in 2011, but that doesn't mean he deserves all of the blame.

Let me be clear on this point. Blaine Gabbert has not once made an excuse for his poor performances. You can leave that to me, because there are a number of valid reasons that Gabbert didn't play well in 2011 that I'll outline at a different time. The point here is that his broken toe is just one more item to add to a long list of reasons that Blaine Gabbert had a rough rookie season. All signs point to better things to come in 2012.

The beauty of single elimination playoffs

Written by Shane Clemons on .

It's Saturday, and there's not much going on around the Jaguars right now, so I'm going to take this opportunity to point out the greatness of the single elimination playoff. We're nearing the end of one of the greatest sporting months of the year with March Madness, and it's that madness that makes such a system great.

Single elimination systems aren't designed to crown the best team as the champion. That's what college football's BS BCS system is designed to do, but there are simply too many teams in college football with too few games to really be able to do that effectively.

A single elimination system is designed to crown a legitimate champion. The regular season becomes qualifying, not part of the big show as it is in college football. Some would say that such a system takes away from the importance of the regular season which is only true to an extent. You still have to make the tournament to win it all, but that's half the fun.

Playoff systems in general give us de-facto playoff games that the BCS system just doesn't offer. Any sporting season should end with the climax, not fall flat on a number of meaningless games that no one actually watches as the bowl system so often does. Playoff systems aren't perfect; no system is, but they give us gut wrenching moments that can define a generation of sports. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a pair of excellent semi-final games this evening, and marvel at the beauty of the playoffs.

TGS grades Jaguars free agency period

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Bloguin's own This Given Sunday has been going division by division and grading all the teams' performances in this year's free agency period. Here's what Tom Gower of Total Titans gave the Jaguars:

"Unless it was really Robinson that was the key man in Dallas in 2011, though, and not Jason Witten, Miles Austin, or Dez Bryant, the Jaguars are likely to be only a little better in 2012. Even with Mincey and Robinson, they could really use a first-rate pass rusher and wide receiver, and a right tackle wouldn't be a bad idea either unless you're a much better Eben Britton fan than I am. The number seven pick can only answer one of those, though.

GRADE: B"

Recent mock has Jaguars taking Upshaw over Blackmon

Written by Shane Clemons on .

In Optimum Scouting's most recent mock draft, Eric Galko has the Jacksonville Jaguars drafting Courtney Upshaw, an OLB from Alabama. Here's the rationale.

"7 . Jacksonville Jaguars - Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
-The Jaguars need some pass rush help along with targets for Blaine Gabbert. They should have the option of Upshaw/Melvin Ingram or Blackmon/Michael Floyd at this point. Upshaw ready, powerful, and can make an immediate impact, with receiver help coming in 2nd-3rd round."

The first six picks in this mock were, in order, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Matt Kalil, Morris Claiborne, Trent Richardson, and Dontari Poe.

Jaguars across the web: Jaguars getting stronger as an organization

"Smith, entering his fourth season as the Jaguars’ general manager, said this week while the team’s recent effort to trade for Jets quarterback Tim Tebow was another unique event in a unique time in the team’s history, he also believes that the events of recent months – change in ownership, change in head coach, addition of a new team president – has served to make the organization stronger."
