Giant scoreboards in Jacksonville could work well for the team, city

The big news yesterday from the Jacksonville Jaguars was the announcement of their new logo set which will accompany their yet to be revealed uniforms. The teams is bringing a message of "re-birth" to the forefront this offseason, and part of that may include stadium upgrades for Everbank Field.

The big stadium upgrade this offseason could be the installation of new scoreboards in Jacksonville. More specifically, the proposed scoreboards would be the largest in the NFL, about 52 feet tall and 348 feet wide, costing $50 million according to team president Mark Lamping.

Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union dove deeper:

"Lamping said that if they can finalize a deal with the city, which owns the stadium and would be responsible for paying for the scoreboards, in 60 to 90 days, the scoreboards could be installed by this fall. They would be about 52 feet high and 348 feet wide.

At a time when the city is cutting library hours and the buying of books for the libraries, the negotiations could be difficult, but Lamping said the team hopes to come up with creative financing that includes using the money generated by the stadium."

If nothing else, a new logo and new, giant scoreboards would be effective in bringing new attention to Jacksonville. The team is looking to bring interest to themselves, and the $50 million price tag could be a worthy investment for the team and the city.
