At this point in the off-season, we all know that Eric Weddle will be one of the hottest free agent names in this year's crop, and he also plays at a position of great need for the Jaguars. A couple things should immediately jump out when you look at Weddle. First off, he's durable. He's has played in all but 4 games of his 4 year NFL career. It doesn't take a math genius to realize that he misses about one game per year.
Weight: 200 lbs.
Poll: Should the Jaguars attempt to sign Eric Weddle in free agency?
Pros: Weddle does a little bit of everything, and he does it well. In 2010, he had 80 solo tackles, 2 interceptions, and 10 passes defensed. He played on the NFL's best defense in 2010, but a unit doesn't get to be the best defense in the NFL unless all of its players are solid athletes that can pull their own weight and then some. Weddle plays the ball in the air well, and you'll rarely see him being dusted by an opposing receiver due to his knowledge of the position.
Cons: Their is only one major complaint that I have about Weddle. He isn't the fastest guy on the field. That would concern me if he played for the Jaguars, because; Courtney Greene isn't the fastest safety either. I'm not big on starting to adequately fast guys. That's the biggest thing to watch, especially in those games against the Colts.
The Verdict: I don't see enough downside to ignore Eric Weddle. There's no doubt he can play the game at a high level, and he's rarely unavailable due to injury. On top of all that, he's extremely versatile. The downside is that he isn't the quickest safety out there, and that could be problematic against some of the league's best quarterbacks. All things considered, the Jaguars would fix a lot of their issues with just this guy. He could do for the secondary what Aaron Kampman did for the defensive line last year. The signing would also allow Gene Smith to focus more on the linebackers. I'd say go for it.
